DU centenary celebration begins today

Dhaka University campus has been decorated in a grandiose manner with the theme of "Lights of Hundred Years" to celebrate its centenary and golden jubilee of independence.

The five-day long festival begins today with the virtual inauguration of DU Chancellor and President Md. Abdul Hamid at the central field of the university.

The university scheduled various programs from the 1st to the 4th of December and the 12th of December, including discussion meetings, reminiscences, theme song presentations, documentary screenings, and cultural programs.

All entrance gates of Dhaka University and important places, including TSC, Carzon Hall, Arts Faculty, Social Science Building, Mall Chattar, Battola, Smriti Chirantan, residential halls, all streets are adorned with colorful lighting.

The colorful atmosphere of light boxes and placards titled ‘Dhaka University in the Light of Centennial" is the focal point of creating a festive mood on campus. Students, teachers, alumni, and outsiders are seen taking photos with the light boxes.

Dhaka University Pro Vice-chancellor (Academic) and Member Secretary of the centenary celebration central coordinating committee Professor ASM Maksud Kamal said, “Due to the coronavirus epidemic, we could not celebrate the centennial of the founding day of the university on July 1 in a colorful way. The Chancellor of the university and President Md. Abdul Hamid will inaugurate the programme today.”

“Our central playground has seating for about 20,000 people. Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, we managed seating arrangements for 10,000 people by following hygiene rules. Only registered students and guests took part in the event,” added the Pro Vice-Chancellor. 

The program has been screened at the Arts faculty, Mohsin Hall playground, and TSC premises.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzan will preside over the inaugural ceremony. Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotte Schering, also an alumna of the university, will deliver a greeting speech connecting virtually.

Member Secretary of the centenary celebration central coordinating committee, Professor ASM Maksud Kamal, will deliver the welcome address. The Pro Vice-chancellor (Admin) Mohammad Samad will give thanks.
