Marking World Sight Day 2026, the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) and VisionSpring Bangladesh jointly organised a special vision screening programme for drivers, along with the distribution of free eyeglasses. The programme was held on Thursday at the DTCA Bhaban in the capital.
The initiative aimed to highlight the importance of clear vision in ensuring road safety and to contribute to safer journeys for both drivers and passengers.
Around 200 drivers from different agencies and organisations under the Road Transport and Highways Division participated in the programme.
Their eyesight was screened, and those requiring vision correction were provided with eyeglasses free of cost. Under the initiative, the service will gradually be extended to a total of 1,000 drivers.
Habibur Rashid, MP, State Minister for the Ministry of Railways and the Road Transport and Highways Division, attended the programme as the Chief Guest. Dr Mohammad Ziaul Haque, Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division, was present as the Special Guest. The programme was chaired by Mohammad Mosiur Rahman, Executive Director (Secretary) of the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority.
Speaking at the event, State Minister Habibur Rashid, MP, said, “Road safety does not depend solely on improved infrastructure or effective traffic management; the health, physical capacity and eyesight of drivers are also directly linked to safe mobility.
Regular eye examinations and access to necessary healthcare for drivers are therefore important components of road safety. I hope that this initiative will be expanded in the future to reach drivers in different parts of the country.”
Mohammad Mosiur Rahman, Executive Director of the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority, said, “Ensuring road safety requires an integrated approach alongside infrastructure development, traffic management and law enforcement. The well-being of professional drivers, particularly clear vision, plays a crucial role in safe driving and accident prevention. DTCA is committed to working in coordination with relevant stakeholders to build a safer and more efficient transport system”.

Mohammad Shahroz Jalil, Project Director of VisionSpring Bangladesh, said, “Over the past year, we have screened the vision of more than 30,000 drivers and transport-sector workers across Bangladesh and provided eyeglasses to more than 24,000 people who required vision correction. We have received important cooperation and support from DTCA, BRTC, BRTA and other relevant institutions in implementing these initiatives.
