Drumstick farming begins in Chuadanga commercially

Some farmers have started cultivating drumstick, locally called ‘Sajna’, plants on commercial basis at village Howli in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga. It was known that Sajna is becoming a boon for its growers at the area. 

Damurhuda Upazila Agriculture Officer Moniruzzaman has motivated the farmers and house owners to plant it in the crop fields and homesteads.

Ramjan Ali, son of Noor Hoque of village Hawli in Damurhuda upazila, planted ‘Sajna’ on 12 katha of land. In the meantime he sold leafs of Sajna as vegetables amounting to Tk. 40,000. But the cultivation cost him Tk 20,000 for growing of Sajna. 

He expected to produce 960 kgs of data (stem of a plant) in the first phase and its price may amount to tk 76,800. The harvesting goes on all the year round, he said.  

Belal Hossain of village Howli in the upazila brought 7 kathas of land under Sajna cultivation. In the meantime, he sold leafs of the plants a total of Tk 18,000. 

Arafat Hossain of the village has taken on 2.50 bighas of land under ‘Sajna Crop’ cultivation at the village of Howli in Damurhuda upazila.  Sajna, data and leafs are demanded by the consumers, he added. 

The sources added that Sajna is known as vegetables plants. Loamy soil is need for it cultivation. It grows without irrigation.  Chuadanga is fit for its cultivation. 

Moniruzzaman, Upazila Agriculture Officer said we motivated farmers to cultivate Sajna in the upazila. The upazila agriculture department is giving them different type of suggestions for cultivation Sajna plant. Besides house owners have planted Sajna on the backyard of their homes.
