Drug dealer killed in Noakhali gunfight

A suspected drug dealer was killed in a gunfight with law enforcers at West Mahduri village in Sadar upazila on early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Khalil Prokas Bhandari Rubel, 32, son of Abul Kashem Bhandari of Ayubpur village of the upazila. He was wanted in 16 criminal cases, police said.

Officer-In-Charge of DB police, Kamruzzaman Shikdar said they arrested Rubel from rail line area on Wednesday evening.

Later, according to his confession, police reached the place with Rubel for recovering firearms last night at about 3 am. Sensing the presence of law enforcers his cohorts opened fire on them, he added.

The law enforcers also returned the fire leading to a gunfight which continued for some time. At one stage, Rubel was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene. Five policemen, including the OC, were injured in the gunfight. Police recovered one LG, one pipe gun, six bullets and some sharp weapons from the spot, the OC added.
