Drive carried out against illegal sand extraction

A mobile court fined a man Tk 50,000 for illegally extracting sand by cutting a pond in the middle of a crop field behind a brick kiln in Nargun Union of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila on Monday afternoon.

Thakurgaon District Administration Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Abdullah Al Noman Sarkar conducting the mobile court drive sentenced the man to one month's imprisonment in case of non-payment of the fine of Tk 50,000.

The convicted was identified as Hamidur Rahman, 35, son of Anisur Rahman of Jagannathpur Union No. 17 of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila.

Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md. Abdullah Al Noman Sarkar sentenced the convicted under Section 15 (1) of the Sand and Land Management Act 2010 after Hamidur confessed to the crime during interrogation. In addition, local sand field traders illegally extract sand from the Tangan River flowing along the Mohammadpur and Nargun Unions. 

The Executive magistrate issued a warning to the Mahindra trolley drivers, who carries the illegally excavated sands. Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md. Abdullah Al Noman Sarkar said that such drives would continue in future as well to maintain the natural environment in the public interest.
