The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer supports a big Phase 4 Scarlet Witch theory. The second trailer shows a lot more of Wanda Maximoff, both in and out of the Scarlet Witch costume she first wore in the Disney+ miniseries WandaVision, as Stephen Strange seeks her out to help against a multiversal threat. Yet, some of Wanda's remarks in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, along with a few other key details, seem to be suggesting that she won't be quite as helpful as Doctor Strange hopes.
Wanda's story throughout the comics, as well as in the MCU, has repeatedly been one of loss. WandaVision emphasized the many sacrifices she has had to make in her life, and the miniseries ended with her sacrificing her own happiness once again in order to free the people of Westview. Although Wanda made some bad choices in WandaVision, she was not the show's villain, since she was initially unaware of how she created Westview's illusions and ultimately decided to give them up, even though it meant also saying goodbye to Vision and her children. Although she made the heroic choice then, some viewers have wondered if a truly villainous path was in her future.
The Doctor Strange 2 trailer suggests Scarlet Witch will turn to villainy in the movie. A scene in the first trailer shows Doctor Strange approaching Wanda on a cherry blossom farm as she acts very apologetic about her actions in WandaVision. However, both the farm and her regretful demeanor may just be another one of her illusions. The second trailer reveals Scarlet Witch facing Strange while he wears the same outfit he wore on the farm, and the trees from before had transformed into deadened husks.
