Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) wholesale kitchen market will be built on the model of China's Beijing wholesale kitchen market, Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam said.

He said, “DNCC’s market will be created with the concept from Beijing’s wholesale market. We are discussing with the market authorities here, they will share the design with us. DNCC’s wholesale market will follow Beijing’s model.”

The DNCC Mayor said these things after visiting Xinfadi Market, a large kitchen market in Beijing, the capital of China, on Monday. This wholesale market supplies 80 percent of food to Beijing residents.

Mayor Atiqul Islam said, “Earlier, many businessmen in Beijing used to shop on the sidewalk. From that place, it will be possible to do a wholesale market in DNCC just like Beijing, following the example set by Xinfadi Market in Beijing.”

Stating that there will be two wholesale markets in Dhaka, the mayor said, “There will be two wholesale markets in Dhaka according to the instructions of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. One will be in Dhaka North, the other in Dhaka South. After the wholesale market, no cargo truck can enter Dhaka. If this can be done, the traffic of Dhaka city will be reduced a lot.”

DNCC Mayor said that everyone’s cooperation is needed to beautify Dhaka city, “Our Karwan Bazar will be moved to the DNCC market in Gabtali and another part will be done in Jatrabari. Before that we need to change our mindset. We have made the master plan of where the vegetable market, meat market, fish market will be after taking the Gabatli through discussion with those who are doing business in Karwan Bazar. According to the master plan, the market will be removed from Karwan Bazar in stages. There will be challenges, but we need everyone's cooperation to make the city beautiful.”

Atiqul Islam said that the wholesale market of DNCC will have a modern system like Xinfadi Market and said, “I have planned to install a small power plant in the wholesale market of DNCC at Gabtali.

Because a lot of electricity is needed. A letter has already been given to the ministry. Because markets like Xinfadi require refrigeration, temperature control is required. Processed food should be kept in these places. They have kept them in proper order. Temperature control is essential for fresh food.”

During the visit to Xinfadi Market in Beijing, DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Salim Reza, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore SM Sharif-ul Islam, Chief Property Officer Dr Md Mahe Alam, Supervising Engineer of Waste Management Department S. M. Shafiqur Rahman and others were present.
