The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Thursday unveiled a Tk 4,527 crore budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, prioritising road and traffic infrastructure while allocating a relatively small share for tackling the capital's chronic waterlogging problem.
DNCC Administrator Safiqul Islam Khan announced the budget at a press conference held at Nagar Bhaban in Gulshan.
The proposed budget allocates Tk 45 crore for canal excavation and waterlogging mitigation, accounting for just 1 percent of the total outlay.
The new budget is Tk 1,542.95 crore lower than the Tk 6,069.95 crore budget for FY2025-26. However, actual implementation of the previous budget stood at Tk 4,082.29 crore.
Of the total allocation, Tk 1,366 crore has been earmarked for road and traffic infrastructure development. The waste management sector will receive Tk 511.41 crore, while Tk 208.85 crore has been allocated for mosquito control and primary healthcare. Another Tk 294.36 crore has been set aside for salaries, honorariums and allowances.
No new development projects have been included in the FY2026-27 budget. Several major projects have also been dropped, including the development of the Kalyanpur retention pond, redevelopment of Karwan Bazar, and improvement of the Baishteki, Sangbadik Colony and Kurmitola canals.
Waste Management Costs Increase
DNCC's expenditure on outsourced waste management services has continued to rise, mainly due to the transportation of waste from secondary transfer stations to the Aminbazar landfill.
The cost increased from Tk 85 crore in FY2024-25 to Tk 125 crore in the FY2025-26 budget. According to the revised budget, actual expenditure reached Tk 132 crore, exceeding the allocation by Tk 7 crore.
Spending on outsourced manpower for mosquito control also rose to Tk 30 crore, up from Tk 28 crore a year earlier.
Meanwhile, expenditure on mosquito control chemicals jumped sharply to Tk 50 crore in the last fiscal year from Tk 12 crore in FY2024-25, reflecting an increase of Tk 38 crore.
