The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) wants control of the rickshaw movement in the area under the south part of the capital and has already licenced several rickshaws for that purpose. Similarly, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has decided to issue rickshaw licences as well.

According to DNCC officials, a committee has been formed to take necessary steps for issuing rickshaw licences at the 7th meeting of the second council of the corporation on Saturday.

Dhaka North City Corporation Secretary Mohammad Masud Alam Siddique has already issued an office order approving the five-member committee.

The chief revenue officer of DNCC has been made the convener of the five-member committee to take necessary steps for issuing rickshaw licences. Besides, the Deputy Chief Revenue Officer has been made the member secretary of the committee. Furthermore, other members of the committee are the chief stock and purchasing officer, law officer and system analyst of DNCC.

Referring to the office order, DNCC secretary Masud Alam Siddique said, “The committee formed as per the decision of the 7th corporation meeting of the 2nd council would work to take necessary steps for issuing rickshaw licences.”

According to a statistical report, about 11 lakh rickshaws are running in Dhaka city at present. The city corporation had stopped issuing licence for a long time. Last year, Dhaka South City Corporation started registering new rickshaws. After 1986, the city corporation had stopped issuing rickshaw licences. As a result, rickshaws since then have continued to run illegally in the capital.

According to a city corporation official, there are more than 79.5 thousand legal rickshaws in the capital, and more than one million illegal rickshaws overall. Dhaka South City Corporation started registering rickshaws from last year and the Dhaka North City Corporation also took steps to register the rickshaws now.
