Discussion going on over Teesta’s water sharing

Jahid Faruk visits river erosion areas in Kurigram

State Minister for Water Resources Jahid Faruk has said that talks is going on with neighboring India to ensure proper water share of the Teesta river. Water is needed for both the countries. The countries are carrying on discussion at technical level on how to use the water of Teesta suitably, he added.

Jahid Faruk said these during his visit at Kurigram Dharla river erosion area at Kaloa of Rajarhat upazila on Friday morning. “We will see the Teesta river water is not only utilizing properly in future but also the people of both the countries will be much benefitted,” said Jahid Faruk.

Replying to a query, he said that river erosion in the area would be minimized within upcoming two to three years. Efforts are going on so that the locality as well as the inhabitants isn’t affected by floods. During his visit in Kurigram, he inaugurated CC blocks and geobags producing activities at erosion hit Kaloa of Rajarhat upazila of the district.

MP from Kurigram-2 constituency Ponir Uddin Ahmed, MP from Kurigram-3 constituency Prof Abdul Motin, chairman of Kurigram Zilla Parisad Md. Jafore Ali, district Awami League president Aminul Islam Monju Mandal, director general of Water Development Board Mahfujar Rahman, supervising engineer for Rangpur region Harun ur Rasid, executive director of Kurigram Water Development Board Md. Arifur Rahman among others were present at the time.

Jahid Faruk visited ongoing Buriteesta river excavation work at Ulipur Upazila, NagrakuraT-head dam area and a new project to protect Brahmaputra river embankment in Chilmari Upazila. Later he observed erosion prone areas at Ramna in Chilmari Upazila and Hatia in Ulipur Upazila by speed boat. The minister left Kurigram for Gaibanda district by water on Friday noon.   Sources of Kurigram Water Development Board said development work of Taka 302 crore continues in the district.
