Information and broadcasting minister Hasan Mahmud on Friday said that diplomats would be made aware of the Vienna Convention, if it is necessary. He also noted that the diplomats’ intervention in the internal affairs of the country is not appropriate. He came up with these remarks after issuing of statements from 12 countries over the arrest of Prothom Alo journalist Shamsuzzaman.
The foreign diplomats especially ambassadors and high commissioners stationed in capital Dhaka, must need to understand the political history of Bangladesh before issuing any public statement or making any remarks. It has been noticed that countries like the US, UK and some European countries regularly tell us to improve our human rights situation, while it’s them, who have been providing shelter to the killers of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred intellectuals.
They must refrain from making
comments on Bangladesh’s
internal affairs like human
rights, elections and politics
But it was seen that the human rights are violated extremely in those countries, which are asking about the issue. Their comments on the internal affairs of Bangladesh are obscene and against diplomatic norms and etiquettes. Their behaviour is contradictory as the way they are trying to fulfill the interests of a vested quarter is worrisome.
They also must refrain from making comments on Bangladesh’s internal affairs like human rights, elections and politics as such statements are a violation of diplomatic norms and values.
Foreign diplomats should not make any unwanted statements and comments on the internal affairs of Bangladesh in order to strengthen friendship and bonding.
Bangladesh is fully committed to ensure security and safety of the diplomatic community in Bangladesh. Foreign diplomats are free to give advice on human rights, elections and politics as long as they do not interfere in the country’s internal affairs and cross diplomatic etiquettes.
Therefore, they must refrain from giving ‘prescription’ of any other country regarding democracy and human rights of Bangladesh.
