Digital Forensic Lab to detect cybercrime and the criminals started functioning under Rajshahi Metropolitan Police on Sunday noon. In cooperation with the US Department of Anti-terrorism Assistance and the US Embassy the lab has been installed at the Cybercrime unit of RMP headquarters.
RMP Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique inaugurated the Lab as the chief guest. He said during the modern Technology based age, the cyber criminals are engaged in regularly committing new types of crimes using various social media through various electronic devices. The police stations under RMP are also receiving varieties of cybercrime allegations and filing general diaries in this connection. Cybercrime units under RMP are assisting to investigate the allegations and the diaries. RMP's own digital lab will now conduct tests on the authenticity of the samples to identify crime and the criminals using digital devices. He further mentioned, already necessary instruments and a sophisticated digital forensic lab with software have been set up at the cybercrime unit of RMP. The lab will ease to detect crime and to dispose of more cases in a short time. He thanked the American Embassy and the trainers of ATA for assisting to set up the lab.
Assistant Police Commissioner of Cybercrime unit Utpal Kumar Chowdhury said, recovery and analysis of secret data from the computer and digital storage media will be possible through the digital forensic lab. Valuable data preservation or transfer will be possible through the electric device using thumb drive, internet, laptop and other devices. The lab will also test the information or samples defaced to conceal crime. Using forensic devices, the lab will also recover data from mobile phones, tab, GPS device, drones and analyses those. The deleted data including the SMS, call log, communication list, phone IMEI and ESN related information, web browsing, wireless network settings, geolocation information, e-mail and internet media and form, social networking services, posts and the samples of various dark and deep web-site's while collar crimes will be recovered and analysed. The function was attended, among others, by Additional Police Commissioner ( Crime and Observation) Bijoy Basak, Additional Police Commissioner ( Traffic and DB) Shamsun Naher, Deputy Police Commissioner( Sadar) Saifuddin Shahin and the ATA trainers from the US.
