More than three hundred Diarrhea patients have been admitted to hospitals in Barguna in the last 24 hours. So far 4 people have died.
Many have taken shelter on the floor as the hospitals do not have the required number of beds. The health department is struggling to cope with the shortage of essential medicines and doctors.
According to the Civil Surgeon's Office, 4,593 people have contracted diarrhea in the district from January to April 21. According to the Civil Office, the official death toll was two till now, but the non-official death toll was four, of which three died in Betagi.
According to the Civil Surgeon's Office, 90 patients have been admitted to the diarrhea department of Barguna General Hospital in the last 24 hours. About 60 people have recovered and gone home. Most of them are women and children.
Of these, 90 patients are being treated in Barguna Sadar, 61 in Betagi, 28 in Amtali, 18 in Patharghata and 18 in Bamna. In the first week, on average of 25-30 patients were admitted to the hospital for treatment. In the last three days, the number of infected people has increased to an average of 100 and in the last 24 hours, it has increased alarmingly to 124 patients.
The diarrhea department of Barguna General Hospital has only eight beds. Patients are even lying on the hospital floors. On Tuesday morning, Barguna General Hospital was seen on the ground, with many people on the ground floor of the hospital undergoing treatment.
Barguna Civil Surgeon Dr Maria Hassan said the incidence of diarrhea has increased with the onset of the summer.
