Dhalghata Union Parishad Chairman and Upazila Awami League leader Ahsan Ullah Bachchu was arrested along with firearm on Tuesday.
Bangladesh Navy personnel nabbed him from a cyclone shelter building in Muhurighona area under Dhalghata Union in Moheshkhali upazila of Cox's Bazar district in the morning.
When the UP chairman was being brought after his arrest, some riotous residents attacked the Navy personnel and tried to snatch the Chairman. Then, the Navy personnel opened blank fire.
Contingent Commander of Navy Haider Ali said that Dhalghata UP Chairman Ahsan Ullah Bachchu occupied a cyclone shelter building in Muhurighona area and built a shelter for a long time. He allegedly used the cyclone shelter as a criminals’ den and a torture cell.
On Tuesday morning, the Navy personnel conducted an operation to evacuate the chairman's illegal hideout in the said cyclone shelter and arrested him. After searching the cyclone centre, a locally made firearm, bullet and other weapons were recovered.
The Contingent Commander of Navy said when the chairman was brought with the firearm after the operation, some unruly residents attacked the members of the navy and tried to snatch the chairman. Then, the Navy personnel opened blank fire.
The UP chairman with the firearm has been handed over to Moheshkhali Police Station.
There are allegations that Ahsan Ullah Bachchu established a reign of terror in the area after he was elected as the chairman on the nomination of Awami League ticket in the last UP elections. He is accused of taking hostages at gunpoint with his terror forces and occupying government cyclone shelters and several shrimp enclosures illegally.
