The government plans to generate 42.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity by August 2028 by processing around 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste produced daily in Dhaka, Prime Minister's Adviser on Information and Broadcasting Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Press Information Department (PID), Zahed said the project is part of the government's broader initiative to improve waste management while producing clean energy.
He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman recently chaired a meeting at the Secretariat to review two major waste-to-energy projects planned for Aminbazar under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Matuail under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
According to the adviser, China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC Group) will invest in the Aminbazar waste-to-energy plant.
The facility will process about 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste each day to generate 42.5MW of electricity, with the goal of supplying power to the national grid by August 2028. The plant is expected to remain operational for 25 years.
Highlighting efforts to modernise urban sanitation services, Zahed said DSCC has launched a digital waste management application named "Clean Care."
The app, inaugurated on Tuesday by DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam, will allow residents to submit complaints related to waste collection and cleanliness directly, enabling authorities to respond more efficiently.
The adviser also said the government will work with the Dhaka district administration to clear accumulated waste along the Aminbazar-Hemayetpur highway, improve environmental conditions and plant neem trees on both sides of the road following the prime minister's directive.
