Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, said that the development work in the northern region is progressing fast. Bangladesh Awami League is fulfilling one election manifesto after another.

“The Rangpur region was once neglected. Dhaka-Rangpur road is becoming four lane, railway communication has improved, and quality of service has increased. Syedpur Airport has been declared a regional airport and the development work of the airport is in progress,” he said.

The Commerce Minister made the comments in a speech on Saturday at the RDRS Bangladesh's Begum Rokeya Auditorium in Rangpur, jointly organized by the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Citizens for Good Governance and the United Nations Democracy Fund.

There was a time not a single flight would come here, however, today about 16 flights are operating and will increase in the future, said the minister.

“We are trying to open Thakurgaon Airport. We have to compete and move forward. Rangpur Begum Rokeya University has been established, Agricultural University is being implemented in Kurigram, Bangabandhu Aviation and Aerospace University is being implemented at Lalmonir Hat. North Bengal is not backward now, he said.

The minister said tea production has started in Panchagarh and Thakurgaon and Lalmonirhat districts. Inspired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Kazi Group started tea production in Panchagarh.

Tipu Munshi said, “Today, 14 percent of the country's total tea production is being produced in the northern part of the country. When the ongoing projects are completed, the fate of the people of the north will change radically.”

Rangpur City Corporation Mayor Mostafizur Rahman addressed the discussion as a special guest under the chairmanship of Dr Khandaker Golam Moazzem, Research Director, Center for Policy Dialogue.

Later on, the Commerce Minister exchanged views with the leaders and workers of Bangladesh Awami League in his constituency Kaunia and Pirgachha Upazila.
