Dense fog damages cropland in Chuadanga, farmers in distress

Farmers are now in fear of incurring losses due to damaging of their crops in the field affecting by dense fog. Besides potters, day laborers, extractors and others have been passing their days with challenges over cold wave. 

According to Meteorological Office, the mercury level drops in Chuadanga at 14°C on January 4. Winter has started to show its strength with heavy fog in Chuadanga during the last two weeks. Most of the day, the sun is un-visible, the surroundings are shrouded in fog from evening to morning.

It is learnt, paddy seed beds are on the field. Besides the farmers have been cultivating other crops like 8,457 hectares of vegetables, potatoes, 3,075 hectares of mustered, 57 hectares of flowers, 2,66,410 date trees and 40,000 hectares of corn.

These crops are getting damaged due to fog, according to the farmers.

Drivers of different vehicles have been plying their vehicles switching on head lights to avoid road accidents. 

Shafiqul Islam, an extractor of date trees of village Shrekol-boalia in Sadar Upazila of the district said, date juice extraction from the date trees have been stopped during the last two weeks for dropping fog  and uncertain sun rising at the village. 

About 425 potters of Chuadanga district are not making clay-made cookware, kitchenware, cattle feeding jars, rings for wells and slaps of wells for want of sunny. As they have been bearing their family with different challenges. 

Day laborers do not have work at the crop filed and other areas. Somebody is waiting at home for his job but nobody asks him to attend at work. Same scenarios is every area of the district.

 Saiful Mollik, a farmer of Boalia village under Sadar upazila in Chuadanga, said there is heavy fog in the crop fields at night. Polythene has to be used to protect potato fields which in turn production costs are increasing.

Bevash Chandra Saha, DD of Agriculture Extension Department said, field level officers have been monitoring and advising the farmers how to prevent their crops from dense fog.
