It is alarming to note that the dengue situation is getting worse in the capital. Experts opine that, dengue situation takes an alarming turn in Dhaka, as many city dwellers don’t keep their homes clean to contain Aedes mosquitoes, while the authorities of city corporations don’t take effective measures in this regard. The authorities are busier with awareness campaigns than containing mosquitoes.

People in different parts of Dhaka city are now keeping complaining about intolerable mosquito-biting both at night and day. We all can recall that a record number of people were affected by a widespread dengue outbreak in 2019. However, City corporations can’t do much if the people are not aware and don’t play a vital role in containing the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes.

We have to create a healthy environment

where mosquitoes do not breed in

the first place

There is a lack of awareness and even reluctance on the part of construction companies to address the issue as it is often found that the under-construction buildings are increasingly becoming the breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes.

Usually in construction sites, high numbers of mosquitoes are found in water-filled barrels.  Only by focusing on larvicide rather than eliminating the breeding grounds the issue cannot be addressed properly.

Some steps are taken by both city corporations to tackle mosquitos. Mist blowers and fogging machines are used consistently in the sewers in different areas of the city. It is to be noted that, this method is not enough to get rid of the menace. In the longer run, we need to do more than simply killing mosquitoes. We have to create a healthy environment where mosquitoes do not breed in the first place.
