Demolition of illegal structures begins in Mongla

Excavation work has started on both sides of Kamardanga Government Record Canal in Burirdanga, Mongla, as excavation work was disrupted due to illegal installation.

Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Nayan Kumar Rajbangshi and Water Development Board Bagerhat Sub-Divisional Engineer Md Arif Hossain started the operation to restore the connection canal of Mongla Ghasiyakhali International Water Channel from Sunday morning.

Officials of the local land office and water development board including the navy, police and concerned contractors were also present at the time.

Although about 8 km of the 10 km long canal could be excavated, the remaining 6 km was disrupted due to illegal installation. In this context, the concerned authorities started the eviction activities on the government canal on both sides. 

Both sides of the canal were occupied and multi-storied buildings were constructed. Others also took possession of the land by constructing illegal structures Locals accused a man named Ajmal of embezzling large sums of money. He is the supervisor of a canal excavation contractor.

After visiting the spot on Sunday morning, our correspondent saw that canal excavation is underway under the Water Development Board of Ward No. 1, Digraj Bank Road, Buridanga Union. The canal excavation is going on, but proper rules and regulations are not being obeyed as per the design.
