Declaration of more dailies to be cancelled soon

Declaration of more daily newspapers will be cancelled soon, said Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday.

The information minister disclosed this after a meeting with the representatives of Bangladesh Newspaper Council (BSP) on Sunday.

He said the ministry has started work to prepare a list of daily newspapers those are not being published daily despite having the approval of daily newspaper.Earlier, the government has cancelled declaration of a total of 100 newspapers.

The information minister also spoke about the presidential election. Regarding Mohammad SahabuddinChuppu, who has been nominated by Awami League, he said, "Awami League has nominated an extraordinary person for the post of President." 

Hasan Mahmud said, “SahabuddinChuppu who has been nominated for the 22nd President candidate was a brave freedom fighter. His contribution to the freedom of the country is unforgettable. He showed great determination as the commissioner of ACC at the time when there was a conspiracy against the Padma Bridge. He has shown his talent in the politics of the country”.

Regarding Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's comments about presidential election, the Information Minister said, “BNP actually has no interest in this country. All their interest is to bring Tariq Zia back home and free Khaleda Zia from prison. Therefore, the government is not thinking about such comments”. 

He said BNP wanted to unleash chaos in the country in the name of perambulation. But they could not succeed due to the watchful eye of the government. 

According to the information of the Directorate of Films and Publications, currently the number of registered newspapers in the country is 3, 222. Of them,1 thousand 323 are daily newspapers. 

At present, the number of daily, weekly and monthly newspapers published from the capital Dhaka is one thousand 141. Of them, 509 are daily newspapers, 345 weekly and 287 monthly newspapers.
