Decentralization has been on the to-do list for a long time in Bangladesh. Now more than ever the necessity to realise this idea is being seriously pondered upon by experts. The current population of Bangladesh is widely spread across the various villages, unions, upazilas and districts. But, the majority of the people have a sight towards the capital. This is due to a large array of reasons. From education to administrative benefits everything is localised in Dhaka. This causes a continuous flow of people towards the mega city who are in search of a better lifestyle.

The result of such influx is the unplanned urbanisation of the city. The whole public sector is suffering from this. It creates a myriad of problems. The people outside the city are suffering from lack of proper or good public services which create a barrier in the economic development. Moreover, the centralisation of everything causes bureaucratic corruption in case of job allocation procedures.

Decentralisation of administrative system

is very much needed at this moment for the

reduction of pressure on the governance system

In this regard, recent reports published in this daily suggest that the local administrations would bear the lion’s share of government expenses at the local level. As Dhaka is the most densely populated city in the world, decentralisation of administrative system is very much needed at this moment for the reduction of pressure on the governance system.

Reports say that the flow of investment is increasing gradually and the ratio of imbursement is in a good position because of high growth in exports and remittance. The recent numbers show a promising future in the export of goods and labour for the country.

The public should be given incentives to take up positions outside of Dhaka. Proper initiatives should be taken so that the public is more encouraged to stay where they are and also the government should try to offset the influx of citizens in Dhaka by providing new opportunities in the areas where people are located.
