DB busts fake currency racket

Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police recovered a huge amount of counterfeit money and counterfeit money making equipment from Badda area of the capital on Monday.

DB also arrested five people in connection with the fake currency network.

The arrestees were identified as Abdur Rahim Sheikh, his wife Fatema Begum, Helal Khan, Anwar Hossain and Israfil Amin.

Getting secret information, a team of DB’s Gulshan Division raided a house in Noorer Chala area under Badda Police Station of the city.

After searching the house, DB personnel seized fake notes of Tk 43 lakh from the house.

Talking to the reporters at the spot after completing the operation, Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) AKM Hafeez Akhter said the fake currency racket, dope gang and snatchers become desperate during various festivals, especially before Eid-ul-Azha.

We are working to stop their activities, he said adding that not only the people but also the state is suffering huge losses due to fake currency.

He urged the city residents who will carry more money, to do transaction through the bank, instead of carrying cash.

Mashiur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner DB’s Gulshan Division who led the special operation, said, "During the operation, we recovered around  Tk 43 lakh fake notes, a laptop, two colour printers and other equipment which were being used  for making fake currency notes.”

During their primary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they were earlier arrested for being involved in counterfeit money and illegal drug trading.

Arrested Fatema Begum was arrested from a house in city’s Hatirjheel area in 2019. But her husband Rahim managed to escape that time.

The arrested gang members had been selling counterfeit money for a long time.

In last three years, a large number of people have been involved in making counterfeit money before Eid and other festivals, DC Mashiur Rahman said.

He also said that a case was being filed with Badda Police Station against the arrested under the Special Powers Act.
