Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested a Hefazat-e-Islam leader from Dhaka’s Basabo area on Friday.
The detainee Islamist leader was identified as Rezwan Rafique.
Talking to the Bangladesh Post on Saturday, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of DMP's Media and Public Relations Iftekharul Islam confirmed the matter.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of DB conducted a drive in the area and arrested Rezwan on Friday night.
He was shown arrested in a case filed with Paltan police station over March 26 violence, centring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in the capital Dhaka this year.
DB officials said Rezwan was circulating provocative information via Facebook and other social media platforms in a bid to launch an initiative to free the jailed Hefazat leaders.
