Hanging cables of internet, dish net, telephone and many other services continue disrupting the city life especially in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area.

Visiting around the DSCC area, hanging cables were seen in almost everywhere despite the city corporations’ initiatives of removing all the hanging cables.

Rubel Ahmed, a resident from Purana Paltan, told the Bangladesh Post that the hanging cables made a noisy environment around his residence. He said, “This rubbish should be removed as soon as possible.”

Tanvir Mukammel, a businessman from Kakrail, claimed that the hanging cables of internet and dish network continue to pose a very disruptive environment in this city for a long time.

Earlier, the DSCC started its cutting campaign on 5 August and  DNCC on 1 October last year to remove the illegal cables. In protest, Internet Service Provider Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) and Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) announced the closure of the service.

However, after the failure of the telecommunications regulator agency BTRC and the power department to remove it, the mayor of the DSCC, Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, took the initiative to remove the cables last August.

Under his direction, Dhaka South City Corporation also cut and removed it on various roads in the capital. But the campaign came to a halt after the Internet Service Provider Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) and Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) threatened to shut down the internet across the country.

Now, Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation, is in a hard position to clear the road cables of the capital.

In the eviction drive, the city corporation has been removing illegal structures as well as hanging cables since January 3.

On the other hand, due to the pressure of the city corporation, this time ISPAB has started its own cutting campaign. ISPAB officials said that a Cable Security Task Force (CSTF) has been formed with service providers. These members have started working in more than a hundred areas of the two cities.

Later, the leaders of the organization postponed the program and held a meeting with Mayor Taposh on October 18. At the meeting they promised to remove the hanging cables by November.

Contacted, South City Corporation spokesman Abu Nasser told the Bangladesh Post that the deadline of removing the hanging wires from various roads in the southern city and to take it underground was first extended to November and later extended to December in response to their application.

Reminding that the illegal hanging cables still hanging on the road even after issuing the ultimatum, he said that mayor of the South City Corporation, Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh is in a strong position to remove the disrupting cables from the roads.

However, DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh met the leaders of ISPAB and COAB at DSCC Nagar Bhaban on October 18 last year. At the end of the meeting, he announced that an agreement had been reached by November to take all the hangings of the Internet and cable television under the soil.

He said, "We want to free Dhaka city from the rubbish of cables. We all agreed that we want to turn this Dhaka city into a beautiful Dhaka. It is possible if we work together, we have reached that consensus.”
