Customs seizes jarda consignment in Ctg

A preventive team of Chattogram Customs, Excise and VAT commissionerate seized huge quantity of Jarda (tobacco) worth about Tk3 crore from Mirsarai upazila on Wednesday for evading excise and VAT duties, reports BSS.

Based on secret information, this jarda item was seized from a godown of Absar Traders located in Hinguli bazar of Mirsarai upazila. The seized Jarda cartoon has taken away in the Vat commissionerate godown at Sadarghat old customs house premises in the port city. A case has been lodged under sections of VAT and Excise regulations for evading of government taxes. 

Customs and VAT commissioner Md. Enamul Hoque told that acting on secret tip-off, 258 cartons of Hakimpuri jarda made of Kaus Chemical Works, Dhaka were seized. The total weight of these tobacco products is 3,260 kg. The market price of these seized Jarda is about TK 97.82 lakh, VAT amount Tk36.68 lakh and sale tax Tk.1.84 crore, that total cost of this jarda products stand at three crore taka, the source added.

Enamul Hoque said owner of the consignment could not be traced during the seizure of these tobacco products. The on duty staff Md. Sumon could not show any necessary papers including VAT challan, and supplementary tax receipt before the customs team. After proper investigations, these seized tobacco products will be sold out in auction, the sale proceeds will be deposited to the government exchequer, the sources said.
