Chattogram Customs House has seized 19 tonnes of imported banned sodium cyclamate in a consignment arriving at the port following the announcement of Soda Ash Light by DSS Enterprise in Bangshal, Dhaka.  Sugar is 50 times sweeter than regular sugar, which is one of the leading causes of cancer.

Customs House Deputy Commissioner Salahuddin Rizvi confirmed the seizure of the consignment.

According to the source, on May 18, the container of the consignment on the HR Hera ship from Jindao port in China was actually blocked at the Asikuda World System of NBR under the Port Control Unit (PCU) Risk Management Analysis of Custom House Chattogram.

The container was forcibly taken down at the Namson Container Depot on Wednesday for a full physical examination with the help of the Custom House's Audit Investigation and Research (AIR) team as the importer did not start the process of unloading the consignment.  During the physical examination, a removable sticker containing the name and other information of the importer was found on the bag of the product.

Imported condensed sugar was found hidden inside the sack.  The matter was reported to senior officials and 19 tonnes of imported cinnamon and 1 ton of soda ash were seized.

Customs House Commissioner Md. Fakhrul Alam has directed to identify the culprits and take strict punishment.
