Customs gives BM Depot permission to operate under conditions

4.5 months after the explosion, the BM container depot at Sitakunda, Chattogram has received full approval for handling export goods of the garment sector under 9 conditions.

 On Tuesday, the customs authority gave the company a three-month temporary approval.  However, if the conditions are not complied with, the approval will be cancelled after three months, the customs authority said in the letter.

 The conditions are import-export compliance with all policies related to depot, non-objection of port, ensuring fire safety system, implementation of dangerous goods management policy etc.

  BM Depot General Manager Nurul Akhtar said, "Customs authorities have approved us for the management of export products of the garment sector.  The work of managing this export product will start from Wednesday.

 He said, as per the conditions of the customs, since the accident, renovation work is going on at the depot.  Fire safety has been improved.  Installation of fire hydrants is underway to ensure water supply to extinguish the fire.

 Its mentioned noted that after a fire broke out at the BM Container Depot in Sitakunda on the night of June 4, it spread in one after another explosions.  

The bodies of 41 people were recovered from the terrible fire and explosion.  A total of 51 people died after the body was recovered and died in the hospital.  10 of them are fire service personnel.  200 more people were injured.

 BGMEA, Chattogram Chamber and Depot Association wrote to NBR to approve the start of import-export goods management activities at BM Depot due to pressure on other depots after the BM Depot operations were stopped after the accident.

 When NBR instructed the customs authorities to take necessary measures in this regard, the BM depot authorities also applied to the customs in two rounds seeking permission to start all kinds of activities highlighting the progress of renovation activities and security measures.

 After that, the customs authority allowed the BM depot authority to start the export product management activities of the garment sector for a short period of time.
