To resolve the long-standing waterlogging problem, the Chittagong Port Authority is regularly dredging the mouths of the Karnaphuli Navigation Channel and the river canals. As a result, plastic and non-biodegradable waste floating in the mouths of canals and drains in the river is being removed, and water flow is also being maintained.
Chittagong Port Secretary Md. Omar Faruk said that the work of removing waste from the mouths of various canals connected to the city and the Karnaphuli River, including Rajakhali Canal, Chaktai Canal, is being done at the port's own initiative and funding. For this, soil and waste have been removed from the mouth of the Rajakhali Canal to a depth of 2-3 meters.
He said that dredging is being done at the mouth of the canal using modern equipment including grab dredgers through a contracting company. As this process is ongoing, the city's waste water is flowing into the river without any hindrance.
The port authority has called on everyone to come forward to solve the city's waterlogging problem by instilling the habit of throwing waste in designated dustbins instead of directly throwing it into canals, drains, rivers and drains.
