Chattogram Port Chief Engineer (Mechanical) Aminul Islam and senior officer Sandipan Chowdhury have been suspended on the recommendation of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for alleged irregularities in the procurement of equipment.

The ACC sent a letter to the Ministry of Shipping to take departmental action against the two accused officials on November 29.

The port authorities issued an order suspending them last Wednesday (December 8).  However, the matter came to light two days later.

According to port sources, the department has decided to take disciplinary action against five auto voltage regulators for violating government procurement rules.

In the light of this decision, the letter called for taking departmental action against the two officers.  After this letter, the port authorities suspended the two officers.

In the letter of dismissal, the port authorities mentioned that the tender was called without publishing a notice in the newspaper in collaboration with the contractor M/S Janata Enterprise.  This has violated the government rules regarding procurement.

A case has been filed in the Anti-Corruption Commission alleging violation of this rule, either investigation.  It has been mentioned in the letter of the ACC that it has been proved that the procurement has been done in a limited tender system instead of open tender.

Complaint statements were sent to the two officials in this regard.  Both submitted answers.  Their response did not seem satisfactory to the port authorities.  The port authorities said in the order that they were suspended from their jobs for serious reasons.

Chattogram Port Secretary Omar Faruq said the two officials had been suspended on the basis of the ACC's recommendation. A member of the port board has been assigned to investigate the matter.  At the end of the investigation, a final decision will be taken about the accused.
