Three people have been arrested for attempting to rob a mutual trust bank in Jubilee Road area of the Chattogram city and stealing Tk 27.50 lakh from the Bangladesh Suppliers Office in the same building. The CNG auto rickshaw used in the incident and Tk 27 lakh 50 thousand in cash were recovered.
Deputy Commissioner Vijay Basak gave the information at a press conference at the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) South Division office on Saturday afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner Vijay Basak said Mahfuz, 30, a CNG auto rickshaw driver was arrested around 11.30pm on Friday for stealing a road at the entrance of a rural field opposite the Gauchia Cycle Mart at the old railway station under Kotwali police station. Five thousand taka in cash and two machetes were seized from him.
According to the arrested auto rickshaw driver Mahfuz, Mohammad Monir Hossain and Khuki Begum were arrested from Tanki Pahar area of Biaswa colony Kanchabazar under Akbarshah police station around 3.30 am on Saturday. The stolen money in the custody of Khuki Begum was found on the sunset in the living room. At that time, a plastic bag full of stolen Tk 27 lakh and 1 range used for smuggling were recovered.
The arrested are Mohammad Monir Hossain, son of late Mohammad Hossain of Tanki Pahar Shantinagar G-Block, his wife Khuki Begum (28), Mohammad Mahfuz, son of Mohammad Aziz of Anaji Bari in Chanpara 3 No. ward of Kachua police station in Chandpur district.
They entered the Jubilee Road Mutual Trust Bank branch around 11 a.m. last Wednesday, officials saw an iron grill cut on the south side of the bank. The thief entered the bank but did not take any goods or money. Inside the Bangladesh Suppliers office on the 3rdfloor of the same building, the grill of 2 office windows was cut and the iron chest and cupboard drawer kept inside the office room fell open. Papers with all the valuables kept inside the chest of drawers were scattered on the floor and the cash of the business kept in the drawers was stolen. The theft took place between 7pm and 6am on Tuesday, police said.
Kotwali Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nezam Uddin said the arrested Md Monir Hossain was a professional thief. He has been involved in the theft profession for 7 long years. About 200 to 250 have been stolen during this time. In addition to his theft profession, he has a shop in the area of Bishwakloni Shapla Gasline. He sells the stolen goods in the shop. Every night at 11 pm, his personal CNG driver Mahfuz came out with the intention of stealing.
He said he stopped the CNG auto rickshaw in the area where he saw the dark environment, climbed the pipe through the back road of various offices, cut the window grille and stole inside. After the theft, Monir Hossain handed over the stolen money to auto rickshaw driver Mahfuz. CNG driver Mahfuz shared Tk 10,000 from Tk 27 lakh 50 thousand.
He also said that inter-district thief Amir Md. Monir Hossain is his own elder brother. Amir died last February. Last Thursday, Md. Monir Hossain organized the feast of elder brother Amir with the stolen money. A bank check book was recovered from them. Two cases have been registered against them in the police station. A seven-day remand has been sought in the court. Another money laundering case will be filed if the stolen money is transacted through a bank.
