A Chattogtram court on Tuesday sent Saraipara Ward Councillor Saber Ahmed to jail over the killing of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Mahiuddin Sohel.

Saber’s lawyer Sheikh M Iftekhar Shimul said that his client had been taken into police custody.

Earlier, the Awami League leader secured a month’s interim bail from the High Court. He was told to get bail from the subordinate court within this period.

Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Akbar Hossain Mridha rejected bail plea of the councilor after a hearing in the case.

BCL leader Sohel was lynched by a mob at Pahartali Railway Market in Chattogram for alleged extortion on January 7.

His family claimed that it was a premeditated murder. His younger brother Shakirul Islam Shishir filed a case at Double Mooring Police Station naming 27 people.

Saber is one of the main accused in the case. So far, 17 suspects have been arrested.
