Covid infections surge by 60pc in one week

Bangladesh has been witnessing an increase in Covid-19 infections for the last few days. The number of infections has increased by 60 percent in the last one week, compared to the previous week.

The information was provided by the line director of the DGHS Non-Communicable Disease Control (NCDC) Dr Md Robed Amin during the regular media bulletin on Covid-19 on Sunday. 

Robed Amin said that the rate of Covid-19 infection in the country has been increasing since December 20. On December 27, the infection rate went over 2 percent. 

Highlighting the official data, he said that the number of coronavirus cases in the country was 6,745 in November which increased to 9,255 in December. 

Bangladesh registered one more death in 24 hours from Covid-19 till 8am Sunday. The total number of deaths has reached to 28,077 with the latest figure.

The country recorded 557 new infections in the meantime taking the total number of people infected to 1,586,466, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday.

The current positivity rate stands 2.91 percent and the overall positivity rate stands at 13.76 percent.

In addition, the death rate now stands at 1.77 percent in the country, added the release.

The deceased was a female and hailed from Rangpur division. 

A total of 19,130 samples were tested across the country till 8am Sunday. 

Some 253 Covid-19 patients have recovered during this period. A total of 1,549,557 people have recovered from the virus so far and the recovery rate stands at 97.67 percent.

As of Sunday, 5,458,709 people died of Covid-19 across the world and 289,786,965 have been infected so far, according to Worldometer.
