A Dhaka Court yesterday cancelled bail of two High Court Division employees arrested for allegedly taking Tk 9.30 lakh as bribes in a judge's name.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sultan Sohag Uddin revoked the bail of Md Abdur Rashid, an office assistant of the High Court Division, and Md Hafizur Rahman, an office assistant of the registrar general's office, after two days they were granted the bail.
Rajib Sheikh, a sub-inspector of Shahbag Police Station and the investigation officer of the case, submitted an application to the court for cancelling their bail on July 14. Sheikh argued that the charges fall under the scheduled offenses of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act and that the accused need to be remanded for further questioning.
On July 12, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tarikul Islam granted bail to them after they were produced before the court with a forwarding report.
Despite the investigation officer's statement that both were directly involved in taking bribes in a judge's name, the magistrate granted the bail.
According to the case statement, the two employees allegedly accepted Tk 9.3 lakh as bribes from the relatives of death-row convicts in a murder case in front of court No. 21 of the Supreme Court Main Building around 5:00 pm on July 10 in the name of a judge.
The judge upon learning of the incident summoned the Supreme Court security team and handed over the two employees to Shahbag Police. The police recovered the full amount of the bribe.
Then the High Court Bench Officer Sujit Kumar Biswas filed a case against them with Shahbagh Police Station.
