Country’s largest sculpture of Bangabandhu inaugurated

The largest sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been made in the country at the initiative of CCC Mayor and Chattogram Metropolitan AL unit Gs AJM Nasir Uddin. 

The sculpture has been established at the corner of Baropul in Halishahar of Chattogram city to commemorate the ‘Mujib Barsho'. City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin inaugurated the sculpture titled 'Bajrakantha' on Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said, "The sculpture is made to spread the history of Bangabandhu's departure, Bangabandhu's 7 March speech and Bangabandhu's contribution to the Independence War among the new generation”.

CCC has undertaken a massive program on the occasion of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This sculpture was made as part of that.  It is the largest sculpture in the country, he added.

The City Mayor also said that the expression of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's speech has been highlighted in this sculpture named 'Bajrakantha'. 

The height of the sculpture built at a cost of Tk 87 lakh 70 thousand is 22.5 feet, the height of the whole sculpture including the base is 26 feet. It is made permanent by casting white cement, which weighs about 30 tons. 

Prior to this, the original sculpture was made with clay (modelling clay) for about 4 months.  That earthen form was first exposed to the public. The day-long exhibition was held in the presence of a large number of media representatives, which was open to the public.

The sculpture was created under the advice and supervision of Shaila Sharmin, the then director of the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Chittagong, and Ahmed Iqbal Haider, a playwright. As the sculptor of this sculpture, Bhaskar Mohammad Atiqul Islam, Assistant Professor of Institute of Fine Arts, University of Chittagong, performed the overall work of making the original sculpture, starting from the design (model) of the sculpture.  

During the inauguration, Councilors HM Sohail, Nazmul Haque Duke, Hasan Murad Biplob, Ershad Ullah, Reserved Ward Councilor Afroza Kalam, CCC Chief Engineer Lt.  Colonel Sohail Ahmed, Private Secretary to the Mayor Mohammad Abul Hashem and others were present.
