Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha or Rajuk is the sole development authority of Dhaka city. However, despite being a public agency meant and responsible for coordinating the development of Dhaka city has been afflicted with corruption for a long time. It is disconcerting news that the very source of physical development of the capital, from where every building plan is critically scrutinised and then given clearance, is also a place where corruption reigns supreme.

A report published in this daily showed that Transparency International Bangladesh or TIB has found out traces of mass bribery, corruption and irregularities. It shows that people are bound to pay bribe at all steps, from design approval of a building to different monitoring phases of its construction. The report was so structured as such the way Rajuk conducts its work is itself a challenge towards good governance.

Prior to this the Anti-Corruption Commission had filed a case against three officials of Rajuk over forgery in allocation of a government plot in Purbachal project. It is evident that the issue of corruption is not new in Rajuk rather it has been plaguing the city dwellers for a long time.

Conscious people are now asking questions—Why has this been going on? How much does Rajuk actually contribute in the planned development of the capital? When will this corruption in the city’s development authority be eradicated? These questions are yet unanswered.

On the other hand, the housing and public works minister has said in another news report that TIB is trying to grab the attention and applause, demeaning a people-friendly state organisation basing on the information provided by others. If such is the case then why is TIB doing so? Much is left on this issue which needs to be cleared out for the public.

The authorities concerned should take proper steps in getting to the bottom of this latest development about Rajuk. Also, it is high time that corruption and bribery is eradicated from Rajuk to begin developing a properly planned smart and digital Dhaka city.
