Cop ‘embezzles’ money in name of sending people abroad

A case has been filed against a police constable for embezzling Tk 25 lakh in the name of sending men to Europe. 

Rakibul Islam, a resident of Ghop DIG Road in Jashore town, filed the case with a Jasshore court on Thursday. Rakib is a permanent resident of Jogania village in Naragati upazila of Narail district.

Taking cognizance of the matter, Judicial Magistrate Saifuddin Hossain issued summon and fixed May 2 as the next day of the case.

The accused, Mohammad Jewel, is currently serving duty in the Police Control Room at the Police Headquarters of Dhaka. His police ID number is 7202072619. Jewel is a resident of Char Uttar Bhuterdia village in Babuganj upazila of Barishal district.

According to the case statement, Rakib had a friendly relationship with police constable Jewel, who told Rakib that he could send people to Europe. Later, Rakibul became interested for sending his brother Mahmud Hasan and brother-in-law Al Amin to Europe through Jewel. 

On January 1 in 2019, Rakib handed over Tk 25 lakh to Jewel in this regard as Jewel promised to send them abroad within two months. But he failed to send them abroad. Jewel finally pledged a non-judicial stamp of TK. 300 on January 26 in 2020 on condition that he would return the money on December 1 in 2020.

Jewel also handed over a cheque against the money. It was dishonored on December 16 in 2020. Later on January 13 this year, the lawyer of Rakib sent a legal notice but Jewel did not respond. Rakib finally filed a case on Thursday.
