Coordinated efforts needed to fight against food adulteration

Speakers at a workshop said that coordinated effort is needed to fight against food adulteration. Journalists can play a vital role through publishing reports on agriculture sector in which different problems faced by the farmers at field level and make them aware about bad impact of toxic chemicals.  

They also said that for the development of agriculture sector at a great extent in hilly region, the role of pressmen is very imperative. 

The speakers said these at a training workshop for the local journalists on the use of modern agricultural technology. It was held in the training room at the office of additional director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Rangamati town on Wednesday.

Agriculture Regional Service, Rangamati region organised the workshop where a total of thirty journalists from different print and electronic media participated.

Md. Ali Ahmmed, principal of Agriculture Training Institute in Rangamati, conducted the opening session as resource person. 

Underlining the need for boosting agro production, Ali Ahmmed said that the pressmen can play a significant role through delivering their reports on the agriculture sector in hilly region. 

During the workshop, through video projector he elaborately narrated on various issues including Integrated Pest Management, useful insects and birds, harmful pests, excessive use of pesticide by the unskilled farmers on their various farms, how to tending vegetable fields and other crops land to prevent from pest attack and building of awareness amongst them.    

Rangamati Deputy Director of DAE Paban Kumar Chakma in his speech during concluding session described about the bad impact in human body due to use of toxic chemical in foods and how to prevent it. 

People in the country have been suffering from various macabre and fatal diseases for long due to having of chemical treated and poisonous foods items, said Paban Kumar. 

He further said that the greedy dishonest and unscrupulous traders of different food items are using toxic chemicals including formalin for their profit. “Whatever we are eating everyday those all are poisonous. Various chemicals are being used by the dishonest traders in different fruits like mango, banana, pineapple and jackfruit. We also noticed the same scenario in the kitchen market for the case of vegetables and fish,” he said. About the prevention from such a dreadful situation, he stressed the need for comprehensive efforts by the all stakeholders to make the people free from food adulteration. Everyone has to be come forward with joint-hand against such heinous acts and it is very imperative to building awareness amongst the consumers and farmers. 

People of all walks of life in the society must be conscious against the injurious impact of chemical treated food items. More campaign programme has to be carried out in the radio, print and electronic media in this repurpose, adds Paban.
