Construction of crematorium on Khas land, river protested

The villagers of Jatrabari in Gohala union under Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj formed a human chain to protest the construction of a crematorium by occupying government Khas land and Kumar river. On Wednesday (March 06) afternoon, people of all classes and professions of the village participated in the human chain.

Prominent social worker Moktar Sheikh presided over the human chain programme. Obaidul Islam, Borhan Fakir, Imam of Jatrabari Mosque Md Hadichur Rahman, Sekender Sheikh, Delwar Hossain, Sahin Molya, Anwara Begum and others spoke in the hour-long program conducted by Hiru Mollah of Jatrabari village.

The speakers said that a vested interest group has been illegally occupying the government Khas land and Kumar river in Muslim-dominated Jatrabari village for a long time to build a crematorium. There is no people of Hindu community in the area. However, the administration and the villagers are trying to build a crematorium here ignoring the court injunction. 

Despite the protest of local people, they are destroying the environment and the water of Kumar river by burning two bodies here.

The villagers conduct their daily activities with the water of this river. 

Moreover, the residents are fed up with the strong smell of burning human body. 

Muksudpur UNO SM Imam Razi Tulu evicted the illegal structure on Tuesday (March 5) afternoon due to the illegal construction of the crematorium. The villagers participating in the human chain demanded intervention of honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Gopalganj-1 Member of Parliament (MP), Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Muhammad Farooq Khan to stop the construction of crematorium in the Muslim populated area.
