Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) removed more than 15,733 metric tonnes and 16,518 metric tonnes of waste respectively. The total waste removal amounted to over 32000 metric tonnes till 5pm on Friday.
However, city-dwellers expressed their dissatisfactions that the clean-up had not been carried out efficiently. People, especially in the south of the city have seen roads remaining uncleaned on the second day of the Eid.
Heaps of waste were seen in lanes and bylanes of the older side of Dhaka and odor was spreading in the area even on the second day of the Eid. The authorities concerned previously promised to manage the waste as soon as possible.
The DNCC Mayor said, “Some 650,000 waste bags, 50 metric tons of bleaching powder and 1,005 cans of 5-liter volume Savlon were distributed among the city-dwellers in order to keep up healthy environment.”
While inspecting the removal proceedings of waste in different areas of DNCC on the second day of Eid, he said that 100 per cent of the waste was cleared by midnight of the day.
The mayor further said that due to the sincere cooperation of all including the local councillors, it has been possible to remove the waste from the entire area of Dhaka North City Corporation in a short period of time.
Earlier, DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh urged the people of Dhaka to finish sacrifices of animals by the second day of Eid.
“Our huge manpower is continuously doing this cleaning work. They also need time to celebrate Eid and take rest. We want to give them an Eid holiday for one day," the mayor said
"If anyone can not finish slaughtering the sacrificial animal by the second day, please put the animal waste in the designated bag at your own responsibility and leave it at your nearest interim waste transfer center," said the mayor.
He added that the manpower has been working since the night of the 20th, and the officers and employees have been working continuously. However, waste can be seen even after most of it being removed. It is a call on the people to cooperate in this huge task.
The mayor further said that the seasonal traders have collected the skins of the animals; however, they may not have been able to sell them.
“We have been noticing this in front of our sewers in various places they have left those skins in the sewers and it is a heinous act. I've repeatedly asked them not to block the drains, because we're still in the rainy season”, said the mayor.
