It is good to note that the government is making its best efforts to build the capital Dhaka city as a modern one through taking time-befitting programmes.
A story headlined “Circular waterway getting face-lift” published in Bangladesh Post on Tuesday says the government plans to give a modern look to the circular waterway project for multidimensional use of the four rivers surrounding Dhaka city.
The route will be from Abdullahpur to Dhur-Birulia-Gabtali-Rayerbazar-Babubazar-Sadarghat-Fatulla-Chasara-Signboard-Shimrail-Purbachal road to Termukh.
The number of motor vehicles is increasing fast in the city as the economic condition of the people is improving. But the space of roads is limited and most of them are from northward to southward.
Keeping this problem in mind, the government plans to improve the situation from current levels by developing communication systems on both roads and waterways in and around the capital.
We hope the government will continue the ongoing drive
in order to evict all illegal structures from the banks of
rivers Buriganga, Turag, Shitalakkhya and Balu
Circular waterway will be enriched with a parking yard, walkways, passenger canopy, and special type of RCC stairs on the banks of four rivers- the Buriganga, Turag, Balu and Shitalakshya- surrounding Dhaka city.
Besides, an eco-park, recreation center, benches to sit, food court and necessary toilets will also be constructed along the 50km walkway around the river bank.
We think people are using trawlers to travel through waterways, which means they will choose water buses if those are made passenger-friendly. In this regard, authorities concerned will have to ensure passengers’ safety and security so that they will be interested in travelling the water ways.
Besides, we also think the government will continue the ongoing drive in order to evict all illegal structures from the banks of rivers Buriganga, Turag, Shitalakkhya and Balu.
