Meher Afroze Chumki, MP, and Shabnam Jahan Sheela were made president and general secretary of Mahila Awami League respectively for the next three years.
Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader announced the names of the newly elected president and general secretary of Mahila AL following its sixth triennial council held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Saturday.
Sabera Begum and Parul Akter were elected president and general secretary of Mahila Awami League's Dhaka South City unit respectively while Shaheda Tarique Deepti and Hasina Bari were elected president and general secretary of Dhaka North City unit respectively.
The AL general secretary also announced the name of Simeen Hussain (Rimi) as a presidium member and Jahanara Begum as women affairs secretary of AL Central Working Committee.
Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the conference and spoke as the chief guest. The conference started at 2:30 PM at at the historical Suhrawardy Udyan. The leaders and activists of Mahila Awami League started gathering at the venue in groups since morning. Suhrawardy Udyan and the surrounding areas were covered with banners and festoons from Shahbagh to Matsyabhaban on one side, and from Shahbagh to Dhaka University's TSC to Shapla Chattar. To join the conference, the organization's leaders and activists from different levels have taken positions around the venue.
About 40 leaders have submitted resumes as interested candidates for the post of president and general secretary in the conference
