Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin has stated that China is a top priority for Bangladesh in terms of expanding trade cooperation. As part of this effort, Bangladesh is keen to work with China on Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
The statement came on Sunday afternoon when the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, paid a courtesy visit to the Commerce Adviser at the Secretariat.
The Adviser mentioned that China has already announced that it will provide Bangladesh with 100% duty-free market access starting from December this year. "We aim to capitalize on this opportunity by increasing our exports," he added.
He further emphasised that Bangladesh and China share a historic relationship. Free Trade Agreement would further strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
The Chinese Ambassador stated that China is taking necessary steps to reduce the trade gap by increasing imports from Bangladesh, especially in products such as mangoes, jute and jute products, and leather.
He also mentioned that China plans to organize a major exhibition in Bangladesh in July next year and sought the Commerce Adviser’s cooperation in this event. Additionally, the Ambassador requested assistance to ensure the participation of Bangladeshi businesses in the China-Eurasia Trade Expo, which will be held in China.
