Childbirth in moving launch, lifetime travel ‘free’ for child

A woman gave birth to a child in a launch bound for Barishal from Dhaka. The launch supervisor Zillur Rahman said that the baby boy was born in the launch named 'MV Prince Awlad-10' in the middle of the river at around 1 o'clock on Thursday night. In that launch, the authorities announced that the child and his parents will be given the opportunity to travel free of cost for life.

The woman who gave birth at the launch is Jhumur Begum. Her husband Harisur Rahman's house is in Jamalpur and he is an employee of a chicken shop in Narayanganj. And Jhumur is the daughter of Abdul Khalek of Sholna village in Raipasha-Karapur union of Barishal Sadar upazila. Jhumur's due date was another 22 days later. 

He was returning home with his relatives with that preparation. This is her second child.

Narrating the incident, launch supervisor Zillur said, “At night, the launch left Dhaka's Sadarghat for Barishal seaport. 

On the way, around 9:30 pm, the woman, a passenger on the first floor deck of the launch, went into labor. She was then offered to be taken to the cabin of the launch.

"But she was not in a physical condition to cross the stairs in that condition. So it was decided that all male passengers on deck were later evacuated. 

After that, with the help of a female passenger of the launch and a nurse from Barisal Medical College Hospital, the woman gave birth.” The passenger was accompanied by his brother and sister on the launch deck.

As the launch arrived at the Barisal seaport at around 5 am on Friday, passengers rushed to take pictures and video of the newborn. The child could not even open his eyes properly in the light of the mobile phone camera. Later, after handling the crowd of eager passengers with great difficulty, the woman got off the launch with her newborn around 7:30 am.

As the child was born in the launch, his father and mother will be able to travel for free for life, the supervisor said, "The director of Aolad Shipping Lines, the company that built the launch. The child was also gifted 10,000 taka in cash on behalf of Yuvraj.”
