The child rights condition in Bangladesh is quite commendable at present. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has received two awards namely ‘Vaccination Hero’ from Global Alliance for Vaccination and the Champion of Skill Development for Youth from UNICEF. These awards recognize the continued efforts in skill development of youth and continued progress in promotion of child rights.
Reports published in this daily have pointed to the fact that in health and education in Bangladesh we are ahead in achieving gender parity. Bangladesh is focused on a number of things at present regarding child development for instance enrolment at primary education, enhancing the quality of education, emphasizing on e-learning, appointing qualified teachers, distributing free textbooks, providing scholarship and stipends, improving school infrastructure, significant improvements in child health services and so on. All these are crucial to help enforce child rights.
Children do not have autonomy or the right to
make decisions on their own for themselves
in any known jurisdiction of the world as minors
In Bangladeshi context the main international human rights treaty on children's rights is the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Children's rights are the human rights of children with particular attention to the rights of special protection and care afforded to minors.
Children do not have autonomy or the right to make decisions on their own for themselves in any known jurisdiction of the world as minors. Hence, their adult caregivers are vested with that authority, depending on the circumstances.
Bangladesh has certainly improved in ensuring children's rights over the years as it was highly focused in Millennium Development Goals and is prioritized in different human rights indexes. Still, many things need to be done for the children of our country. The authorities concerned should focus on elaborately enforcing child rights as children are the future leaders of the country.
