Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Rezaul Karim commented that Chattogram can benefit economically if the tourism sector development opportunity is properly utilized.

CCC Mayor made the comments during a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner Dr Lilly Nichols on Monday.

CCC Mayor said, people know Chattogram as commercial capital.  Every day a large number of people come and go to Chattogram for business purposes.  However, if the entertainment sector of Chattogram expands, people will bring their families even if they come for business purposes, through which Chattogram's economy will gain new momentum.  Keeping in mind the potential of the tourism sector, we are taking various steps for the development and diversification of the infrastructure sector including the Ocean Amusement Park.  I want Chattogram to become a traveller's paradise instead of just being a commercial city.  Let Chattogram be full of entertainment lovers from home and abroad.

"If Canada wants to invest in the development of Chattogram's tourism sector, Chattogram City Corporation will allocate land.  Besides, Canada can make the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations with Bangladesh a memorable one by building a full-scale hospital in Chittagong.  And Canada can play a supportive role in building the capacity of education and health institutions run by CCC.”

Canada's High Commissioner Dr Lilly Nicholls said that Canada provided food aid to save war-torn Bangladesh immediately after independence.  Canada has always maintained friendly relations with Bangladesh in its 50 years of diplomatic relations.  Canada has always extended its helping hand to the development of Bangladesh and now wants to expand the areas of assistance.  If the mayor of Chattogram wants any specific assistance from Canada, Canada is committed to implementing it.

“Canada is leading the world in education. Canada can enrich Chattogram through training and exchange of experience in technical education.  Besides, many industrial groups in Canada are interested in investing in the pharmaceutical industry in Chattogram.

In addition, Canada can contribute to making Chattogram a clean, healthy city by providing the world's best waste management technology.  Canada can help Bangladesh advance green energy by supporting solar power development.”

Canada High Commission Senior Trade Commissioner and Councillor Angela Dark, Trade Commissioner Kazi Golam Farhad, CCC Chief Revenue Officer Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Mayor's Private Secretary Muhammad Abul Hashem, Chief Engineer Rafiqul Islam, Chief Accounts Officer Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, Public Relations and Protocol Officer Aziz Ahmad were present.
