Bangladesh does not have direct shipping connections with the five countries of the Scandinavian region. Those five countries are Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Scandinavia.
The third port has to be used for sending goods to about three crore consumers in the region and for importing goods. In order to eliminate this problem, discussions are going on between the Chattogram port and the Gothenburg port of Sweden regarding direct shipping.
If these negotiations are successful, the import of goods from the region will be easier as well as the delivery of goods will be facilitated.
Mehdi Hasan, Bangladesh's ambassador to Sweden, told the media that on January 24, we held a virtual meeting with all those involved in the matter. The meeting was attended by government representatives as well as private business representatives such as BGME, freight forwarders, representatives of ship owners, shippers' council. On the Swedish side were senior officials from the Gothenburg port.
He said, the public and private representatives have agreed. This will facilitate trade with those regions. Their opinion is important to increase the private sector trade.
Five countries in the Scandinavian region have the highest per capita incomes. There is a demand for products that are produced in Bangladesh and it is possible to create new demand. We encourage the private sector to be interested in this market. Gothenburg is the only deep sea port in the region and any ship can anchor there. As a result, it is possible to increase trade relations with the five countries there.
