Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Engineer Nurul Karim, conducted an on-site inspection of the ongoing waterlogging mitigation project in city. The project director and officials from the Bangladesh Army’s 34th Brigade were also present during the visit.
During the inspection, the CDA chairman emphasized the importance of completing all ongoing works before the upcoming monsoon season. He instructed the concerned officials to expedite canal excavation, remove accumulated soil, and ensure smooth water flow so that the drainage system remains functional and waterlogging can be minimized during heavy rainfall.
According to project sources, a total of 36 canals are being excavated and expanded under CDA with implementation support from the 34th Brigade. Of these, work on 34 canals has already been completed, marking significant progress in the project.
Work on the remaining two canals is currently underway. Jamalkhan Canal is about 80 percent complete, while Hijra Canal has reached approximately 50 percent completion.
Officials expressed optimism that the remaining work will be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
A review meeting on the overall progress of the project was also held last Saturday, where the current status, challenges, and strategies for faster implementation were discussed in detail.
Concerned officials stated that the project is not limited to canal excavation alone; it also focuses on ensuring a sustainable and effective urban drainage system. Once the canals are fully operational, waterlogging in low-lying areas of the city is expected to be significantly reduced.
Experts believe that this initiative is a crucial step toward addressing Chattogram’s long-standing waterlogging problem. Timely completion of the project is expected to ease public suffering and improve the city’s overall environment and quality of life.
