Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has urged the city dwellers to abide by the strict lockdown, announced by the government from Thursday in the interest of their own safety.
“Despite the increase in infections, we are no longer afraid of Corona”, he said. This trend is not good. Ward councilors will also play an active role in making city dwellers aware. Awareness leaflets will be distributed in the wards along with campaign. If necessary, more isolation centers will be set up.
The Mayor made the remarks while addressing the third meeting of the Corona Vaccine Activities Committee at the conference room of the Chittagong City Corporation office near Tiger pass in the city on Wednesday noon.
Chief Health Officer of Chittagong City Corporation Dr Selim Akhter Chowdhury was in charge. Chittagong City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Shahidul Alam, Divisional Health Director Dr Hasan Shahriar Kabir, Councilor Dr Nisar Uddin Ahmed Monju, Shahed Iqbal Babu, Civil Surgeon Sheikh Fazle Rabbi, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education) ASM Jamshedul Khandaker addressed the meeting.
Dr. Hasan Shahriar Kabir, Director of Health, said this time we have to follow the government instructions in any way. Or there is a possibility of danger.
He said about 15 people died in Chittagong division last Tuesday. The infection rate on Wednesday was 29 percent. So there is no alternative but to stop traveling unnecessarily and wear a mask. He also mentioned that the isolation center set up by Hasan Shahriar Corporation is playing a good role. Divisional Health Director Shahriar urged the city dwellers to be careful and not to panic.
CCC CEO Mohammad Shahidul Alam said, “Our responsibility is to follow and implement government guidelines. However, the corporation has to keep the emergency services running in the interest of the city dwellers, such as health care and sanitation activities in the city”.
CCC chief health officer Dr Selim Akhter Chowdhury said former mayor Manzur Alam's organization, Alhaj Mostafa Hakim Welfare Foundation, wanted to provide free oxygen to the corporation's health department for the treatment of emergency covid patients in the city.
CCC mayor said the Chittagong City Corporation's health department has shown great success in vaccinating against corona. It is my expectation that they will play a positive role again when vaccination activities begin. The mayor said that a hotline number has been set up to provide medical assistance to the city dwellers. The hotline number is (634584).
He mentioned that the corona patients of the city can be treated at the isolation center set up by the corporation at Laldighi. There is an ambulance service with adequate doctors, nurses and staff, free food and medicine for the patients, he said. Therefore, he urged the people of the city to ensure the safety of themselves and others without any panic.
