Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said that measures should be taken to remove the possibility of waterlogging by removing soil from all the canals of the city before the onset of monsoon. The implementing agency of the mega project that is going on to alleviate waterlogging has to take the responsibility now and take steps now so that there is no waterlogging in the coming monsoon. In addition, the implementing agency has to work with vigilance so that the loss of life and property due to lack of safety net during the implementation of the project is not repeated.
He directed to make DPP of the project by ascertaining the exact location and feasibility of 21 canals which are outside the scope of mega project of the city. He directed to prepare a list with pictures of the manpower of the cleaning department and ensure digital attendance. Ward Councilors are also responsible for the overall supervision of cleanliness, mosquito eradication and illumination.
He specifically instructed the City Corporation to transform itself into an orderly institution and to carry out its duties properly from its own position. The mayor also called for keeping the city clean ahead of the month of Ramadan, spraying mosquito repellent in every mosque before the Tarabi prayers with fogger machines, repairing roads cut by WASA with quick patchwork, not cutting any new roads, ensuring uninterrupted lighting in the city and executives. He called upon all to take measures to monitor the market so that the common man does not suffer.
He made the remarks while addressing the 14th general meeting of the 6th elected council of CCC at KB Abduch Sattar auditorium at Old Nagar Bhaban in Andrikalla on Monday afternoon.
CCC Acting Executive Officer and Secretary Khaled Mahmood conducted the panel mayor, councilors, reserved councilors and department heads spoke.
CCC mayor said the only source of income for Chittagong City Corporation is housing tax and trade license. But there are many sectors from which taxes can be collected. He directed the revenue officer to increase the tax coverage by implementing these sectors. He expressed displeasure over the inconsistency and inefficiency of the tax officers, deputy tax officers and tax collectors in tax collection and directed them to prepare a report on their daily activities and submit it within 15 days.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the activities of the real estate department and said that many properties of the city corporation are very valuable here. Despite being told many times, the real estate branch has failed to take action in this regard. He also directed to reorganize the entire branch including the appointment of a real estate officer on an urgent basis.
He directed to take immediate steps from now on in coordination with the councilors to rectify the various irregularities and inconsistencies in the power department.
CCC mayor said that if the people of the city could not be won over, all the activities of the council of CCC would end in failure. That is why every councilors has to take steps to earn his reputation by doing all the necessary service work properly to satisfy the people of his ward, he opined.
