Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has said that in the history of thousands of years, many great thinkers could not bring freedom even after trying their best.  Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has realized the aspiration of a thousand years by establishing an independent sovereign Bangladesh.

That is why he has excelled in thousands of years of history.  But the misfortune did not end with the assassination of Bangabandhu and his family on 15th August 1975, distorting the history of independence. Every attempt has been made to erase Bangabandhu's name from history.  They did not understand that Bangabandhu is not a name written on paper, Bangabandhu is a name and history in the heart of Bengalis.

He said that the children of history never die, they are immortal.  In the long 21 years, the history of Bangabandhu and Liberation War has been distorted and taught to today's generation.  Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina has brought this history back to the new generation after coming to power.

The mayor urged the new generation to be ready to take the lead in the coming days with the idea of glory and self-sacrifice of the liberation war.

He said that if the consciousness of the liberation war is lost, our existence will be endangered.  That is why we have to come forward to establish Bangabandhu's Sonar Bangla in the initiation of the contribution he has left by showing respect to the freedom fighters and risking their lives.

He said this while addressing a reception and honoring ceremony of 173 heroic freedom fighters organized by the CCC at the Institution of Engineers in the city on Sunday morning.

Indian Assistant High Commissioner Anindya Banerjee was the guest of honor.  Acting President of Nagar Awami League Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, former Secretary General of Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council Dr. Zafarullah, Bir Muktijoddha Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman, Muktijoddha Sangsad Metropolitan Commander Mozaffar Ahmed, CCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Shahidul Alam, Panel Mayor Md. Gias Uddin, Afroza Kalam, Councilor Abdus Salam Masum spoke on the occasion.

CCC Secretary Khaled Mahmud, Chief Revenue Officer Md. Nazrul Islam, Chief Education Officer Lutfun Nahar, Private Secretary to the Mayor Muhammad Abul Hashem, Councilors and reserved councilors were present on the occasion.

CCC mayor said Chattogram is a pioneer in everything, has played a leading role in all movements and struggles in all ages.  Chattogram was at the forefront even at the beginning of the war of liberation.  Shortly after Bangabandhu's declaration of independence, the first resistance war started from Chattogram under the leadership of then EPR Captain Rafiqul Islam and on the same day Awami League leader MA Hannan declared the first independence on behalf of Bangabandhu from Kalurghat Swadhin Bangla Biplobi Betar Kendra.  For this reason, the role of freedom fighters in Chattogram is unique.

He said if we do not give reception to the local freedom fighters then the new generation will not be able to know the true history of the local liberation war.  In this way we will be deprived of knowing the history of real freedom and liberation war.

He called upon the researchers, writers and historians of the Liberation War to record from the local freedom fighters various local activities, operations and history of the war.  At the end of the ceremony, the freedom fighters were given crests and gifts by the CCC.
